CEM immediately deployed over 10 vehicles and 40 staff for network operation and emergency service to ensure Macao’s reliable power supply as Typhoon Koppu mauled the Pearl River Delta area last week.

Besides maintaining close contact and cooperation with Guangdong Power Grid, CEM immediately also activated all generation units. Bearing high importance to local supply reliability, the power plants were brought into full play.

Moving in the same route as Typhoon Hagupit last year, Typhoon Koppu created immense impact on the power networks at the Guangdong west coastlines. CEM used the Typhoon Hagupit experience to ensure the reliable power supply in Macao.

After the flooding caused by Typhoon Hagupit last year, CEM has also undertaken improvement works at various areas gradually and raised a number of the power equipment. Thus, this time the water flooding impact was far less severe. CEM promises affected customers and areas that assessment and follow-up actions will be proceeded with relevant improvement.

The water flooding caused by Typhoon Koppu at Porto Interior was severe to cause flooding over the warning line in some power equipment sites, and thick smoke emitted from some of the low-voltage distribution boxes. Basing its experiences from last year typhoon incident, CEM proactively shut down seven customer substations in the area after notification to the Energy Sector Development Office and Civic Protection Center.

After the water flood subsided later, the emergency crew was able to restore the power supply at a better order. Power supply was immediately restored to 1,688 affected customers after 4 hours and 40 minutes.
